Why Pointer Lane?

The story behind the name, the project, and the decision to finally begin.

Two years ago, a friend gave me a copy of The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin for Christmas.

At the time, I enjoyed the book, but I didn’t think much would come of it. Like many ideas that resonate with me, it stayed somewhere in the back of my mind.

The premise was simple: choose a project, commit to it for a year, and show up consistently. Not because anyone is watching, but because the act of doing something regularly changes you.

For me, that idea never quite went away.

I have spent years collecting experiences, stories, lessons learned, photographs, and memories through life with dogs. Field training, agility, hunt tests, road trips, friendships, successes, mistakes, and plenty of moments where I had no idea what I was doing.

More than once I thought about starting a blog.

And more than once I found a reason not to.

There was always something else to do first. Learn more. Organize photos. Find the perfect design. Figure out WordPress. Write better. Be more prepared.

Eventually I realized that if I waited until everything was perfect, I would never begin.

So this is the beginning.

Pointer Lane is my project.

Partly as a way to document the journey. Partly as a way to challenge myself to write more regularly. And partly because some stories are worth preserving before time turns them into fuzzy memories.

The first hurdle was simply building the website. Week one has mostly involved learning WordPress, clicking the wrong buttons, fixing things I accidentally broke, and slowly figuring it out as I go.

Hopefully the learning curve gets a little faster from here.

My goal is simple: one post at a time.

If nobody reads it, that’s okay.

If someone finds a story they enjoy, learns something useful, or simply recognizes a piece of their own journey in these pages, that’s even better.

Welcome to Pointer Lane.
